Realizing that every situation is unique and the DCI drummer in question may be the exception to the rule...

As a teacher, I would rather take the new drummer from scratch in a heartbeat. You still have to go through all the technique stuff, the music theory, and the rudiments but there are no preconceived notions about ANYTHING! Plus the piper in question, while they may have no drumming experience they have heard the style over and over without even knowing what they were listening to, they have internalized it the Scottish Drumming way. You will get a lot of "OOOOOH, that's what they were doing." The terminology is already there. The piper knows what a roll off is, knows what a 4 parted 2/4 march is. Has heard of a strathspey before, knows the phrasing and general tune structure of our idiom.

Those lower grade bands that want the DCI drummer over the piper may want to rethink that idea.

Yea. It seems like a lot of the people you interviewed started out on a different instrument than they are currently playing.

A piper with 10 years experience would likely be around the grade 2 level so they would be very comfortable with all idiom and time signature things already when switching to drumming but the DCI would have vast technical experience but would have trouble learning about Speys and Jigs and that sort of thing.

Either way. Great episode!

Thats a tough one. I would think that the DCI drummer would at least know a lot of the rudiments...

I guess it comes down to one question: is it easier to break old habits or learn from scratch?

I think most lower grade bands would take the DCI drummer in heartbeat.

I have a question to propose. Would you rather convert a DCI drummer with 10 years experience or a piper with 10 years experience? Both are between 20-25 years old.

Great perspective from the drum line... as a piper we are so heads down on our own stuff that we rarely hear a candid view of what drummers worry about, deal with or their background in getting onto the drum line.

This was great! You guys are super entertaining to listen to.

I look forward to listening to the worlds preview for 2012.

I'll be playing in the qualifier and hopefully the final again this year. (Trying to qualify for the 4th year in a row!)

I'm not able to replicate that here.

If you are still having trouble, the best way to get the show is through iTunes, or downloading it directly from the RSS file.

Cheers!

Inverary & Districts medley does it for me! I think in years to come people will be talking about it as it broke them into the top 6 at the worlds. Can't wait to hear this band develop further!

Enjoy the craic you guys have. Keep it up!

I love you guys and your imaginary friend. I would like to extend a theory as to why pipers "wander" during Pìobaireachd (don't think I spelled that myself)- it is to prevent blood clots in the legs.
